Welcome to “A Powerful Mind Secret to Change Your Life” Episode #7 of the BE ULTIMATE Podcast. 

This is Travis Eliot speaking to you from Los Angeles, California. 

So today, I’m going to share with you one of the most powerful techniques and tools that I know. 

This is a game changer! 

In fact, it’s worth more than money can buy. It’s worth more than a mansion of gold. And if you’re interested in improving, enhancing your life in any way, then this practice that I’m about to share with you, it has to be a part of your daily routine. 

So before there was Tony Robbins, before there was his teacher, Jim Rohn, before there was the Law of Attraction, Wayne Dyer, 2,000 years ago, there was a yogi, a wise man, known as Patañjali. And Patañjali systemized all of this knowledge that he had learned from his lineage into something called the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali. And the Yoga Sūtras of Patañjali was a guidebook on how to master your mind, how to master your life. 

I’ve spent many, many years studying this book, many, many years teaching from this book to my students. And in this book is a technique that is all about mastering your mind.

And this technique is known as pratipaksha bhavana. 

Pratipaksha Bhavana. 

Pratipaksha bhavana means when disturbed by a negative thought, replace it with an opposing thought, a positive thought. This is known as pratipaksha bhavana. 

2,000 years ago, these yogis were talking about the importance of the mind state. Because yoga had nothing to do with anything physical and it had everything to do with the mind. And so part of mastering the mind is about mastering your thoughts. 

Now before Patañjali, 

Jesus said, “As a man thinketh, so he becometh.”

And before Jesus, 

Buddha said, “The mind makes a terrible master, but it makes a great servant.” 

He also said, 

“All that we are is a result of what we have thought.” 

So, our thoughts lead to actions. Our actions lead to habits. Our habits shape our personality. And then our personality is what creates our present reality. 

If you’re interested in changing your reality, it all traces back to the thoughts moving through the mind. 

And Patañjali, Buddha, and Jesus all knew this.

When I started teaching yoga a long, long time ago, I was struggling. I had a family. I had a wife to support. I had a baby to support. And I was barely getting by. I love teaching yoga. I was passionate about teaching yoga. I was always enthusiastic to show up and teach yoga. But the reality was, my classes weren’t really that big. And really, those first two or three years, we were barely getting by. In fact, we weren’t just getting by, we were living on credit card debt. And our credit card was racking up and racking up, because we had to pay our bills. 

And then I started to learn about this technique of pratipaksha bhavana from Patañjali. And I started to work with it. And I realized as I began to examine my mind and I began to take a close look at my thoughts that I had this one recurring thought that was was looping over and over again. 

In fact, they say that 95% of the thoughts that you think today you’ve already thought before. 

These thoughts are like reruns going over, and over, and over inside of your mind. Most of your thoughts– you’re lucky if 5% of your thoughts today is a new thought or an original thought. And what I began to learn and uncover was that I had this negative or limiting thought that basically said, “You’re not good enough. You’re not good enough to be a successful yoga teacher. You’re not good enough to be in front of your students and teaching yoga. You’re not good enough to become as successful as all the other yoga teachers in your community.”

And for me, I grew up teaching in Santa Monica. And Santa Monica is ground zero for yoga. There’s more yoga happening in Santa Monica than anywhere else in the world. And so I’m surrounded by this culture of yoga and these yoga celebrities that are just crushing it. Their classes are packed. They’re traveling the world. They’re making DVDs. They’re living the dream. They’re making a lot of money doing what they love to do. And I compared myself to these people. 

But as they say, comparison is the thief of joy. 

And so this recurring thought that I had, “you’re not good enough. You’ll never be like those successful teachers” — it doesn’t matter whether you’re a yoga teacher, or you’re a business person, or an athlete, or whatever it is that you’re doing in your life, you can apply this to your life. 

So I became aware of this limiting thought. And then I started to practice pratipaksha bhavana. 

If my negative thought is “You’re not good enough,” then I have to spin that thought into a positive, into an opposing thought. 

And so now my new thought became, “You are empowered to spread yoga to thousands and thousands of people.” 

This became my new thought. This became my new affirmation. 

And now I began to repeat that thought like planting a seed– and planting a seed into the soil of my mind and watering that seed through the repetition of this affirmation over, and over, and over again.

And it wasn’t easy. And it felt like I was faking it. And I still had that voice screaming out, “You’re not good enough! You’re not good enough!” 

I still had that critic always criticizing, but I stay with the practice. And so I’d drive to class and I would repeat that thought over and over, “You are empowered. You are going to spread yoga to thousands and thousands of people.” 

After a few weeks of doing this, one day, I showed up to teach a yoga class and to my astonishment the class was full of people. And I went back into the garage behind the studio and I started to freak out. I was shaking and trembling. Not because of the excitement that I had all these people, but of that limiting thought showing up again. 

“Who are you to have all these people showing up to take your yoga class?”

And so I had this battle going on inside of my mind before this class.

“You’re not good enough. You’re empowered. You’re going to spread yoga to thousands and thousands of people.” 

And it went back and forth, back and forth. But eventually, the good thought just got just a little bit more leverage than the limiting thought. And I went in and taught that class. 

Now do you think if I go in and I teach a class with the thought of “You’re not good enough” or if I go in and teach a class with the thought of “You are empowered to spread yoga to thousands and thousands of people–” do you think that those classes are going to be the same? 

Of course not!

The class that is fueled by that thought and that belief that you are empowered to spread yoga to thousands of people is going to shape everything. The words that come out of my mouth now are going to be colored by a different energy. The way that I walk around the room, the way that I walk through the space is going to be colored by a different energy. The vibe that I emit into the classroom is going to have an energy of empowerment. 

And so the students felt that. And my classes started to take off. More and more people started to show up. And I started to really become convinced that this pratipaksha bhavana stuff really, really works!

And my local classes went to a whole other level. And then the opportunities started to come in from there. 

I got invited to teach my first teacher training. And so I reached this new threshold. And any time you reach a new threshold, guess what happens. That old negative recurring thought shows up and says, “Travis, remember. You’re not good enough. Who are you to now co-lead this yoga teacher training?” 

And I had to go back to my pratipaksha bhavana. “You are empowered to spread yoga to thousands and thousands of people.” And I went and I taught that yoga teacher training from that place even though I was also scared, and intimidated, and having to work through the fear. It wasn’t that the fear went away, it was just who was running the show and the way that I was relating to that fear began to shift. And this continued through my career. I went on to lead yoga retreats. Same thing would happen. Then I would cross the threshold of making a yoga DVD. The same thing would happen. Writing a book. “Who are you, Travis, to write a book? You’re not smart enough. You don’t know enough. You’re not knowledgeable enough.” 

There’s that critic. There’s that limiting belief. Now back to the pratipaksha bhavana. 

Repeating the thought. Repeating the thought. Repeating the thought. And so repeating the thought gave me the fuel and gave me the ammunition to keep growing, and growing, and expanding, and no longer being dominated or limited by that negative thought or belief. 

This pratipaksha bhavana– if I was stranded on an island and I only had one tool– one tool, one technique that I could use to become successful, to live a life of meaning, to live a fulfilled, meaningful life, hands down, it would be this pratipaksha bhavana. 

So my question to you is, what is your recurring, limiting, negative thought? What is that thought that’s holding you back? What is that thought that’s limiting you from growing, from expanding into a new paradigm of what you’re really capable of? 

Because the things that are holding you back, they don’t exist outside of you. They exist inside of you. And that’s why this work inside of your mind state is so important. 

So what is your negative thought? Get clear as to what that is. And if you’re driving in your car right now, think about it. If you’re on a jog and you’re listening to the podcast right now, think about it. If you’re somewhere where you can write this down, write this down.

What is your negative, limiting thought? 

Once you define what that is, once you become aware of what that is, now I want you to spin this or replace this with the opposing positive thought. 

For a lot of us, these limiting thoughts are universal. 

They are thoughts like, “I’m not good enough.” Maybe for you is, “I don’t belong” or “I’m not capable.” Or maybe for some of you, it’s “I’m unlovable.”

It’s going to be really hard to have healthy meaningful relationships, if your thought is “I’m not lovable.” And you’re going to have to do this work. 

Take what that negative thought is, spin it to the positive, and now this becomes your affirmation. So what is your affirmation? And whatever that affirmation is, when you say it, it should give you a charge. It should send a voltage of energy through your entire body, through your entire energetic field. It should light you up, baby! 

Now it’s not going to be easy as you start to repeat this. Because neuroscience shows that inside the brain, we have this whole sophisticated configuration of neural branches. And these neurons are communicating to each other. And they’re wired in a certain way that locks our brain into these patterns of thinking.

So as you begin to do your pratipaksha bhavana and you begin to affirm this new empowering thought, what happens is you start to pull those branches apart. 

Now anything in nature that you start to pull away from something that’s connected to another thing, it takes effort to do that. There is struggle within that. So it’s the same thing inside of your brain. This is why most people don’t do this. Because it’s hard, it’s difficult, and they give up within that process. But hopefully now that you understand the neuroscience behind your thoughts and your thinking, you’ll know that this is part of the process. And that will set you up to be able to still continue through that discomfort and through that struggle. 

Now as you continue to repeat, what happens is you pull those branches away from each other. You start to reconfigure those neural nets into a different type of pattern. And the more that you repeat the pratipaksha bhavana thought, the more that these neural nets start to lock into a new pattern. 

Fascinatingly– if that’s a word– is that we have something that’s called neural growth factor. 

Neural growth factor is like a glue that helps to glue neural branches together. 

And the more that you repeat something, the more glue or neural growth factor that you begin to draw away from those old negative patterns of thinking into these new positive, empowered ways of thinking. 

The repetition is what leads to mastery. 

You begin to master this new thought by creating more neural growth factor and establishing more glue into this new wiring of the brain through neuroplasticity.

Now it’s not good enough to just think the thought. 

You also have to feel the emotion of what it is that you’re going after. 

Back to my example. I would feel the emotion of abundance. The abundance of reaching people. The abundance of being in my power. I would also feel that emotion of empowerment. This emotion of just feeling strong and alive. 

Not only am I saying and repeating the thought, but I’m also feeling it. And so the feeling helps it to get into the dimension of the body. 

By the way, if you haven’t listened to Episode six, The 6 Human Dimensions, go and listen to that episode. Because you’ll understand why it’s important to be aware of the six dimensions of who you are. 

When you’re thinking the thought, that’s the dimension of the mind. But when you’re feeling it, that’s the dimension of your heart, which also translates into your body, which is the dimension, of course, of your physical body. Now basically, now you’re getting this thought working in those dimensions of your body, your mind, and your heart. 

You could just repeat the thought over, and over, and over again and you may only make a little bit of progress. And this is why some people that try this– and then nothing happens, that’s why. Because they’re not feeling it. 

95% of who we are by the age of 35 is run by unconscious, habitual patterns.

Now this is a little bit scary, because it means that most people are moving through their life unconsciously. These programs that are locked in, these patterns of thinking and feeling that are cycling over and over– they’re not even aware of it– is running 95% of their life. 

No wonder they can’t change the reality. No wonder they can’t generate more health. No wonder they can’t generate more financial abundance. No wonder they can’t generate more spiritual abundance. No wonder they’re struggling in their relationships. I

t’s because they’re doing the same thing. They’re thinking the same thing. They’re feeling the same thing. They’re thinking the same thing. They’re feeling the same thing. And that cycle repeats over, and over, and over again. 

So in order to maximize the effectiveness of the affirmation, you have to transcend the conscious mind into the subconscious mind. 

Now how do we do that? 

Well, we have to get beyond the analytical mind. 

By the way, what’s the first four letters of analytical? A-N-A-L. Anal. 

So we got to get beyond that part of the brain that’s anal. And we got to get into that subconscious part of our brain where those 95% of our habitual patterns by the age of 35 are running us over and over again. 

Essentially, what we have to do is we have to shift the brain waves. If your brain waves are in a state of stress or what we call high beta, you’re not going to be able to penetrate into the subconscious mind. You are living in survival mode. You’re living in stress mode.

As you begin to shift from stress mode and high beta, to mid beta, to low beta, then down into alpha, and theta, and delta, now you are moving beyond the barricade between the conscious mind and the subconscious mind. 

Once you access that subconscious mind, the world is your oyster. 

You can slow your brain waves down through meditation. You can slow your brain waves down through breath work or in yoga what we call pranayama. 

And also, if you have a good nighttime ritual before you go to bed– you’re not watching a bunch of agitating, violent, stimulating television, but you’re reading a book. The lights are dim. You’ve taken your time to wind down at the end of your day. You’re going to shift your brain waves as well. And as you fall asleep, you can repeat your affirmation, because your brain waves are moving from beta to alpha to theta. As you fall asleep, you can repeat your affirmations slowly, tenderly, gently. And then that affirmation will be planted deep inside the subconscious brain. And then your whole entire sleep, that recurring thought– almost like passive income or anything that repeats itself automatically– will run itself over, and over, and over again why you’re thinking.

So while you’re sleeping, this magic is happening on a very, very, very deep level. 

Pratipaksha Bhavana — This is the most powerful mind secret to change your life! 

  1. Step one, become aware of what the negative thought is. 
  2. Step two, spin it to a positive. 
  3. Step three, repeat it like your life depends on it, because it does. 
  4. Step four, feel the emotion. Feel the emotion. And if you’re in your car, and you’re driving, and you’re repeating, you can chant this. You can turn it into a song. You can activate a strong primal energy and emotion. And that’s going to amplify the potency of your affirmation.
  5. Step five, any time that negative thought comes up– and it will. It still does for me all the time. It may not go away. It probably will never go away. But just because it’s there doesn’t mean that you have to believe it.

Choose your thoughts wisely. 

Anytime a negative thought, limiting belief arises, immediately replace it, spin it into your affirmation, to your positive thought.

For every one time you think the negative thought — I want you to repeat the positive thought at least three times. 

Now why three times? It’s because we have a part of our brain that’s 2 million years old and we are wired for something called the negativity bias. Because our ancestors, a long, long time ago, they lived in environments where they were constantly on the search for negative things so that they could survive. What’s the saber tooth tiger going to do if he gets me? If I eat the wrong berry or the wrong food, then I’m going to die. 

We are always looking– we are always looking for the negative in our environment. And the cavemen and cave women that had the positive mind-set, unfortunately, they are the ones that didn’t survive. So genetically, the negativity bias got passed down from generation to generation. 

But now, in our modern-day age, we don’t have those same issues as our ancestors hundreds and thousands of years ago had. And so we have to be very, very aware that there is that part of the brain that’s wired for negativity. 

And if you don’t do this work– the pratipaksha bhavana– then you’re going to have a negative mindset. And as we said, 95% of who you are by the age of 35 is going to be run by those negative programs. So you’re going to have a negative reality. You’re going to have negative speech. You’re going to do negative things. You’re going to have negative relationships. And you’re going be like,”Why is this happening to me?” 

It’s happening because of these unconscious programs that you’re not aware of. So we have to become awoke! 

We have to become awake to what’s happening. So repeat it at least three times. The more the merrier. Think it. Feel it. 

My hope is that this tool will change your life. It changed my life. And I just wanted to pass it on to you guys. So I hope that you find this to be helpful. I hope that you find this to be valuable.
