[The following is the full transcript of this episode of “The Be Ultimate Podcast.” Please note that this is direct from Travis speaking unscripted and unedited.]

Welcome to The Be Ultimate Podcast. This is your host Travis Eliot.

I’m actually recording this at the Mammoth Yoga Festival.

This episode was really inspired by a lot of what I do throughout my life, which is traveling. In fact, I think that I’ve only been home in Los Angeles maybe three weekends, and this is now June 2019.

So I’m on the road a lot and grateful that I get to travel and teach and spread yoga and meditation all over the world.

A couple of weeks ago, I was on a retreat in Portugal. And one night, I was eating dinner with some of the other students, and we were just talking about ways that I stay healthy and keep the immunity strong when I’m traveling and just deal with the demands of traveling and working and not getting sick. And to be honest with you, I’ve definitely gone through phases where I’ve lost my voice and I haven’t felt well. And you still got to show up, and you still got to deliver.

But over the years, I’ve really learned and refined these tips and these strategies to stay healthy so that I can function at my best.

In this episode, I want to share with you my top three favorite supplements to travel with.

Now, when I’m at home, I have way more than three supplements, but I want to keep this simple so that you guys don’t have to go out and buy a zillion things, and then you have to carry all that stuff with you. So I wanted to distill what are those top three supplements and pass that on to you. And if you feel inspired, then maybe you can go out and you can give it a try. You can try this out, and let me know how it works for you.

So the top three travel supplements to stay healthy. I’m going to start with number three, and we’ll work our way up to number one. And by the way, those of you that are listening to this as a podcast, if you don’t know, we also film these podcasts. So you can go to YouTube, or you can go to the blog, thebeultimatepodcast.com, and you can see a video because I’m going to show you exactly what these products look like and will also include links to these products on the blog page.

So let’s start with number three. Number three is what we call Triphala. And Triphala is a very famous Ayurvedic formula and one of my favorite, favorite supplements to take because it includes three powerful dynamic immunity-boosting herbs in it. Those three herbs are called Amalaki, Haritaki, and Bibhitaki, so they all end with that kind of funny sound taki.

And if you’re unfamiliar in Ayurveda, we have what’s called the doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.

I did an episode all about Ayurveda, so you can go back and listen to that if you haven’t already. But essentially, these three different herbs are really good for each of the three doshas.

So Amalaki, the first herb, is really good for the Pitta dosha. The Pitta dosha is connected to, primarily, the element of fire, so it helps to balance out that fire. So anytime you have inflammatory issues, then, Amalaki is really good for that. If you have a high level of acidity in the body or in the blood, Amalaki is great for that.

The second herb, Haritaki is really good for the dosha, Vata. And Vata is the dosha that’s connected to the element of air and space. And when we travel, the Vata dosha, the element of air and space, it gets aggravated. It gets out of balance, especially on airplanes. But just moving around all the time, that can throw the Vata dosha out. So we get spacey in our head, or our digestive system gets out of whack. We might get constipated. And so Haritaki is really good for that dosha, Vata.

And then the third herb is Bibhitaki. And Bibhitaki is really good for the dosha of Kapha. And Kapha, when it gets out of balance, can lead to congestion, and we can accumulate toxicity in the body. We can get all sorts of colds and sinus issues. So Bibhitaki addresses that.

Now, the amazing thing about this formula Triphala, is that it’s detoxifying, but it’s also called a Rasayana. And a Rasayana in Ayurveda means that it’s also a rejuvenative. So it helps to detoxify the tissues of the body, and at the same time, it also helps to build good quality tissue. So whether you’re traveling or whether you’re at home in just your normal life, this is definitely something that I highly recommend.

This is number three, and I personally like the brand Banyan Botanicals.

Now, full disclosure, none of these companies pay me. They don’t even know that I’m doing this podcast. I’m just sharing with you guys what works for me, and I don’t need an endorsement. I just want you to know the brands that I personally choose. There are other brands out there that I’m sure are fabulous. But Banyan Botanicals is the one that I go with.

Before we move on from Triphala, the last thing that you should know about this herbal formula is that it is a mild laxative. So remember when you travel, you throw off that Vata dosha, and so a lot of times, our digestive system can get sluggish.

When I was in Europe a couple of weeks ago, I was eating a lot more bread than I’m used to. And so this can bog down the digestive system, and sometimes we get constipated. So having a mild herbal laxative as part of your awesome arsenal to stay healthy and well is going to help you feel really, really good.

All right. Number two. Number two in the top three supplements to stay healthy while you’re traveling is called Green Vibrance. Green Vibrance is made by a company called Vibrant Health, and this stuff is amazing. This stuff has tons and tons and tons of greens.

Sometimes, you travel to countries, and the last thing that you want to do is be eating lettuce and salad in a place where maybe it’s just not safe. I think about places like India or Mexico. And no disrespect to those countries, but you have to make sure when you’re in those places, that you’re eating cooked food.

So how do you get your greens? And even when I was in Europe, again, I wasn’t getting the same amount of greens that I get when I’m in my normal routine back home in Los Angeles. So to make sure that you’re getting enough of your plant-based greens, this is an awesome supplement to be taken.

Green Vibrance has many of the grasses in it, so oat grass, wheat grass, barley grass, also has spirulina. It has tons and tons and tons and tons of really, really good stuff in it. It also will give you 25 billion probiotics.

So we know that our gut health has a lot to do with our overall health and our overall immunity. We want to make sure that our guts are loaded with good quality bacteria. In the top three travel supplements, I don’t even have a probiotic because I feel like if you’re taking your Green Vibrance, then you’re getting a decent amount of probiotics. So you get a lot of bang for your buck.

Now, I’m a little crazy with Green Vibrance. This kind of freaks my wife, Lauren, out, but what I’ll do first thing in the morning, before consuming anything else, is I’ll take a packet of this. And you can also get this in capsule format. But I’ll take a packet, I’ll rip it open, and I’ll pour the contents straight into the back of my mouth, and then I’ll just down it with tons and tons of water. And it freaks my wife, Lauren, out. She’s like, “How can you do that?!”

But for me, I don’t care how it tastes. If I know that it’s good for me, I’m just going get it into my system. And I’m totally cool with it. But if that freaks you out, you can take this. You can pour it into a cup of water, and then mix it with the water, and then you can drink it that way. The other way is kind of like shotgunning it, so you just get it into the system.

Now I’m just remembering back to the Triphala formula. You want to take this at nighttime right before bed. You take one to two tablets, so you’ll take that on a pretty empty stomach right before bed, and you will also drink that with water.

All right. The number one supplement to travel with to stay healthy is what we call the Wellness Formula made by Source Naturals.

This is number one on the list for a very, very, very good reason. I’ve been taking this stuff for many years. It’s won many, many awards. It’s considered, really, in the industry, to be the number one immune formula.

It has tons and tons of vitamin C. That’s going to be great for your immunity. And it also has things like garlic, propolis, echinacea, all sorts of things that are really good for your immunity when you’re traveling, especially if you’re on airplanes, and you’re surrounded by other people, and your seatmate’s over there hacking and coughing, and you’re freaking out. The air is recycling through the airplane and your immune system really, really gets compromised. So this is going to help combat that.

When I’m traveling, I’ll take three tablets twice a day. You want to take it with food. You can find this in tablet format, or you can find it in capsule format. I personally like the tablet format. It just seems to go down a lot easier. It also has things like vitamin D3, zinc, selenium, olive leaf extract, so tons and tons of good stuff.

And honestly, if you are like, “Travis – I only want one supplement to take; I’m a simple person; I just want one thing” – then I would say this would be the thing to take.

You can also start taking it a couple of days before you travel to go ahead and boost your immune system up. Sometimes you got to take a red-eye, or you’re catching a flight that leaves at 6:00 AM, so you’re up at 3:00 AM. You’re at the airport at 4:00, 4:30. And that lack of sleep and that lack of rest is another thing that hits your immune system.

I also want to give a couple of special mentions out because we all know that a lot of airports and airplane food– it just doesn’t have a great reputation for having good quality food. And it’s good to just carry a couple of things with you, especially protein supplements.

I want to give a special shout out to a company called the RX protein bar which comes in many, many different flavors. Now, the reason why I like the RXBAR is because a lot of protein bars, they may taste better than this one– this one isn’t too bad. These other bars may taste better, but that’s because they’re loaded with sugar. And sugar is no bueno.

This protein bar has no added sugar. It gets its sugar naturally from some dates. It has three egg whites, six almonds, four cashews, two dates. And then it says, “No BS.”

If you’re looking for a good protein bar snack, check out the RXBAR.

There’s also a protein powder that I like called Maximum Vibrance. This is similar to number two on the list, the Green Vibrance. So when you take Maximum Vibrance, you’re getting about 20 grams of protein, and you’re also getting more of those greens. You can’t get enough of the greens. The more greens you get into your system, the more alkaline your pH levels will be.

The more acidic your blood gets, the more likely that you are to get sick. So you want to keep your blood and keep your pH as alkaline as possible.

So those are the top supplements. These are the things that I travel with. I have them right now with me at the Mammoth Yoga Festival, teaching here all weekend. And I’m taking these supplements, and I’m feeling good. I’m teaching six classes in the span of a couple of days, and I got to operate at a high level, so this is one of the ways that I do that.

Other things to make sure that you’re doing is pound back the water. Drink lots and lots of water. Stay hydrated when you’re flying. When you’re traveling, you get very, very dehydrated, so drink lots of water.

I know on the airplane, sometimes you don’t want to be getting up a lot to go to the bathroom. You may be on the window seat, and you don’t want to keep disturbing your seatmates, so you may not be drinking a lot of water.

But when you get to your destination, the first thing that you want to do is grab a big bottle of spring water, mineral water and just pound it back. You can pound it back with some Green Vibrance. Get those greens into the system, and that’ll keep your immune system strong.

Also if you want to avoid jet lag, one of the best ways that you can do that is to exercise. Move your body. Get outdoors. Breath in fresh air. Get sunlight. Let your body adjust to a different time zone, a different place by being in the energy or the vibration of wherever it is that you’re at.

Luckily, when I flew back from Europe to California, I had no jet lag.

And then try and get as much rest as you can. Make sure that when you’re traveling that you’re sleeping a good seven, eight, sometimes even nine hours of sleep every night.

That good quality sleep. We now know research shows that that’s some of the best form of medicine that we can give our bodies. And then meditate.

When you’re on the airplane, meditate. When you’re in the back of the Uber traveling, meditate. When you’re on the train, whatever it is, you’re in the car, and you’re not driving, meditate.

Meditation is going to be really good to reset the nervous system.

That’s it for this episode on the top three supplements to travel with to stay healthy.

I hope that that was informative for you guys.

I have a retreat coming up in Greece in May 2020. Six nights, seven days, me and my beautiful wife, Lauren, are going to be hosting a retreat. We’ll be doing yoga first thing in the morning. And during the day, all sorts of excursions, adventures. And this trip is already filling up fast. I think we already have 30 plus people signed up. And we have room for about 40 or 50, so if you’re interested, go to my website, traviseliot.com and register.

We’d love to have you there with us on the fabulous island of Crete in Greece. And that’s it for this one.

We’ll finish now with the ultimate prayer.

“May we bring strength where there is weakness.

May we bring courage where there is fear.

May we bring compassion where there is suffering,

and may we bring light where there is darkness.

May we be ultimate.”
