Who Knows What’s Good or Bad?

We live in very interesting times. Spend thirty minutes watching the news and it can send you into a downward spiral. Warfare, racism, sexism, bigotry, hate, violence, deceit, greed, and corruption of power. Because technology and social media has united the globe in an unprecedented way there is no escaping the pain and the suffering of the world. Although you may not see it on the media, there are also amazing acts of kindness, charity and generosity unfolding all the time. The Buddha called them the 10,000 joys and 10,000 sorrows of the world.

Progress and transformation isn’t always a clean, linear path. Sometimes we must take a step back before we can take a couple of steps forward. In the big challenging moments of our lives, or of our nation, or of our world what we need is faith. We need to trust and have faith that after the darkest of nights comes the brightest of days.

There is a story about a poor farmer with a son and a single horse. One day his son forgot to lock the stable and their one horse escaped. The farmer’s neighbor came by to say, “I’m sorry to hear about you losing your horse.” The farmer replied, “Who knows what’s good or bad?” A week later their horse came galloping back and brought 10 other horses with them. The neighbor came by and said, “Congratulations on all your new horses, you are a rich man!” The farmer replied, “Who knows what’s good or bad?” A couple of weeks later, the farmer’s son was out riding one of the new horses, and fell off and broke his leg. The neighbor came by again and said, “I’m sorry to hear about your son. That’s awful.” The wise farmer replied, “Who knows what’s good or bad?” A month later an army of soldiers came by the farmer’s house looking to recruit young men to help expand the empire. Because the farmer’s son had broken his leg, his life was spared from fighting in a deadly war.

Practice Tip: Reflect upon your greatest challenges, and how they became your greatest blessings. When moments of despair arise, remind yourself that everything is happening for a good reason. Have faith truth and love always prevail!
