Modern Day Jedi

Recently I was attending a meditation training, at 1440 Multiversity in California, with Jack Kornfield and Tara Brach. One of the highlights of the week was when they invited the legendary Joanna Macy to give a talk. If you are unfamiliar, Joana born in 1929, is a philosopher of ecology, an environmental activist, and her path has evolved from the CIA to Tibetan Buddhism.

I’ve heard my share of talks, but this was one of the best experiences of my life. You know when you hear someone preaching the truth, and you get the goosebumps running up and down the spine? That’s how this discourse was, 90 riveting minutes that I’ll never forget!

Joana spoke about how humanity is currently facing its greatest moment of truth. You can feel how palatable this is in the ethos right now. So many things are being brought into the light…racism, sexism, warfare, chronic disease, corporate greed, political deceit, factory farming, and environmental destruction. As a human species, it feels as if we are moving through the dark night of the soul. But darkness is simply the absence of light.

So how do we activate the light? We activate the light by going internally through practices such as yoga, prayer, and meditation. By finding your own inner luminosity you become a beacon of light within in the world. The more of us that awaken and enlighten, the greater our chance of survival. Joanna, other experts, and the scientific community are all sending out warning messages that the future for humans is dire if we don’t act immediately.

While in the high mountains of Tibet, Joanna Macy learned the secret teachings of the Shambhala Warrior, whose legend goes back over 2,000 years. These warriors were enlightened citizens that created a society based on courage and compassion. Using ancient teachings, they tapped into a magical strength and wisdom known as drala. Their society was imbued with natural bravery, respect, and nobility.

I like to think of the Shambhala warriors as a real life example of a Star Wars’ Jedi! Every day we must train ourselves to be our best physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Through consistent practice we will tap into our deepest strength and power. The next step is to join forces with others, build our communities stronger, embrace diversity, and align our thoughts, words, and actions for the goodness of all life! Through these steps, we will move through the darkness into an age of enlightenment like the Shambhala Warrior!

Be Ultimate,
-Travis

Practice Tip: Keep a daily journal of what you are doing to deepen your practice physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. Every day write down what training steps you’ve taken in each of these four categories. Also, find your tribe. Contribute your energy to communities that stand for virtue and high morals. Bring voice to inclusivity and diversity within those communities.
